#WriteTip - Slay the Adverbs by @TheaLanden, in honor of her @DecadentPub #dragonshifter #romance

This writing tip is short and sweet, and one I can totally get behind. Since I'm eager to find out more about Thea's new 1NightStand from Decadent Publishing, we'll get right into it.

Go easy on the adverbs! I try to limit them to when the most obvious interpretation of the verb needs to be altered. - Thea Landen

Flight of the Dragon Queen

by Thea Landen

For his entire life, Caleb has always been more comfortable surrounded by books and games than other people. When 1Night Stand is recommended to him, he contacts Madame Eve but is too shy to actually meet any of the women she finds for him. Together, they reach a workable solution: a simulated dating experience in a setting reminiscent of his favorite stories.

After following Madame Eve’s instructions, Caleb finds himself in a vivid fantasy world, complete with a damsel in distress who needs rescuing. His objective is clear, but he must find a way around the many obstacles standing between him and Alizeira, the mysterious woman imprisoned in an underground cell.

While working on his plans to save her, Caleb spends time getting to know Alizeira beyond her role as prisoner, and a mutual attraction develops between them. He is unsure whether she’s a real person playing a part like him, or if she’s simply one piece of the elaborate simulation that’s been programmed for his date. Setting her free is the first step to discovering the truth, but how many secrets is Alizeira hiding

Excerpt

Few torches lit up the dank passages, and an unpleasant smell permeated the air. Several captives called or reached out to me as I hurried along, yet I had one goal in mind. When I saw Alizeira in her cell at the end of the corridor, I broke into a run.

“Oh, thank the heavens you’re here!” She rushed toward the door, the heavy chains attached to her wrists and ankles scraping on the stone floor.

I cringed at the noise and put a finger to my lips. “I can’t stay long,” I whispered. “And I don’t think I can get you out tonight. I just wanted to see what we’re dealing with so I can come up with some sort of plan.”

The hurried movements had caused her cloak to slide down one arm, revealing an expanse of pale, creamy skin. Her fingers tightened around the bars to her cage, knuckles whitening, and her brows knit together with worry. “We may be running out of time….”

“What?” A knot twisted in my stomach, and I jerked away from staring at her exposed shoulder. “What do you mean?”

“I don’t know all the details. I’ve heard some snippets of conversations drifting past the window and down these hallways.” Deep-red lips pursed in anguish. “But I believe Sampson and his men are plotting an attack on my land. With me out of the way, they’re going to hurt the people I swore to protect.”

The memory of the captain’s sword pointed at my neck lingered in my mind, yet I had to be strong for Alizeira. “How can we stop them?”

“First, I need to get out of here.” Her lashes fluttered and hints of tears glistened in her emerald eyes. “Please, Caleb. You’re the only one who can help.”

I thought of the keys at the entrance to the dungeon, so very close, and then remembered the armed guard sitting in front of them. The bag and shovel would be of little use to me in a fight, even if I managed to sneak up on him without calling attention to my activities. Ashamed at my shortcomings, I turned away. “I want to get you out of this prison, more than anything I’ve wanted in my entire life,” I said. “But I’m no great warrior or swordsman. I’m afraid of what will happen if I can’t be the man you need me to be.”

She reached through the bars and grabbed my arm with surprising force, pulling me toward her. “You already are. I know you can do it.” Her other hand slipped between the spaces to rest right above my racing heart. “Where I come from, we believe strength and courage have nothing to do with how well you wield a weapon or how many foes you’ve slain. There are far more important traits to possess, qualities no one can teach or learn.”

I ached to embrace her, to hold her tight as I whispered all sorts of promises I didn’t know if I could keep. The impenetrable iron barrier stood in our way, so I settled for covering her hand, clasping it to my chest. “Your confidence inspires me.” The warmth of her skin, the way her fingers fit together with mine, even the fact she had sought out my touch made me feel more alive in this fantasy world than I ever had at home. “I’ll do whatever it takes.”

Alizeira gazed up at me, eyes shining. I tried not to hyperventilate as I debated what to do next. Should I attempt to wrap my arms around her despite the thick bars separating us? Stroke her hair as I had done the previous night? Touch her bared skin? Kiss her?

#WriteTip - Kill Your Darlings by Thea Landen (@TheaLanden), a @DecadentPub #Romance Author

Fellow Decadent Publishing author Thea Landen has a brand new romance out. In addition to snagging an excerpt from Elysium, I also convinced her to give me a writing tip. As we all know, pacing is important. This author has a tip to bring it up to snuff.

Don't be afraid to cut the words/lines/scenes/chapters that are disrupting the flow of the story. I know it hurts because I know how much we fall in love with our own beautiful prose, but in the long run, pacing is more important! ~ Thea

Elysium

by Thea Landen

1Night Stand series

Two years have passed since April Patterson’s husband was shot and killed in the line of duty, and she’s trapped in a haze of grief and uncertainty. Having grown frustrated by all other efforts to engage her in activities where she could meet new people, her cousin pays for a date via 1Night Stand. Not thrilled with the idea, April nevertheless contacts Madame Eve and requests the impossible: a date with her deceased husband.

Brilliant software engineer Drew Monroe created his company, Elysium, to help give closure to those who have suffered the loss of a loved one, through the use of virtual reality. Though passionate about his work, being constantly surrounded by heartache and death has taken a toll on his mental health. When he accepts the case of a young widow referred to him by Madame Eve, her tragic tale depresses him further, but he commits himself to programming April the romantic date she desires.

April arrives at Elysium and prepares to enter Drew’s virtual realm. Will she find the solace she seeks within? Or will she discover she doesn’t need a fantasy world to discover happiness again?

Excerpt

I licked a path down his neck, dragging my teeth across his skin. Downy hair sprinkled across his chest and I ran my fingers through the golden tufts. Firm planes and sinewy muscle defined his lean physique. Determination inspired me to examine every inch, every angle.

Roaming both hands over his sides, I peppered his pecs with feathery kisses. He was like a museum exhibit, a piece of fine artwork, and I played the curious spectator to study him in detail and show appreciation. My tongue darted out to flick across his nipple and he sucked in a sharp breath.

I teased the flat disc a little more before continuing onward. Working down his body, I flung the blankets back to grant uninhibited access. Skimming my breasts over him, I marked a trail down the center of his torso. With both my fingers and lips, I traced every contour of delicious definition in his abs.

Drew stirred beneath me and a low groan rumbled in his chest. Lower and lower I ventured, arriving at the ultimate destination at long last. His thick, engorged cock begged for attention. I hadn’t done this in quite some time, but only one way to get back in action, right?

I started at the base and used the tip of my tongue to paint a line along his entire length. He groaned again, louder than before. I laved the bulbous head with broad strokes, swirling in wide spirals. His fingers knotted the sheets and his lashes fluttered.

I paused in the ministrations. He was ready for me, yet I wanted to see his hunger. Not only did I need to know how badly he craved that intimate touch, how much he coveted me, but I sought satisfaction for more personal wishes, reassurance that I was desirable.

He opened his eyes when I whispered his name. Sweeping my hair over one shoulder, I turned back to his bulging cock. He watched me ease the tip into my mouth and a gasp left his parted lips. With our gazes locked together, I took more and more of him inside.

Writing Tip - On Novellas by Thea Landen

I'm delighted to welcome Thea Landen to my blog today. She my Decadent pub-buddy and fellow RPG fan (Role Playing Game, not Rocket Propelled Grenade. This shared acronym once caused much confusion between my husband and I). She's got a brand new novella out as part of Madame Eve's 1 Night Stand Series, and it's a contemporary romance featuring a CIA agent. Scroll all the way down to get to the blurb and excerpt.

You may have noticed I struggle to exceed the 50k mark and tend to favor the 15-35k range, which makes me a novella-length writer. I've never really thought about book length from a business perspective. I'm more of pantser, and my stories are as long as my characters want them to be. Therefore, it's nice to have someone else expound on the virtues of this category.

On Novellas by Thea Landen

Much like Anna, the heroine of Second Skin, I sometimes feel like I’m living two (or more!) lives. I work in the legal system by day, and I transform into my glamorous romance author persona at night. Throw in paying bills, feeding my family, and other mundane tasks, and I’m exhausted by the time I finally crash into bed!

With e-books becoming more and more prevalent, novellas are on the rise. I, for one, couldn’t be happier about the growing popularity of this specific length of story. As someone who’s always on the go and still hasn’t figured out how to cram an eighth day into the week, novellas are perfect, both for reading and writing.

I have a confession to make: I don’t read as much as I should. *blushes* My “to-read” list keeps expanding, but it’s often difficult to squeeze in some time for sitting down and losing myself in a book. Every now and then I do manage to get through a 100K-word epic, but you know what? Word count isn’t everything, and shouldn’t have any bearing on how enjoyable and well-written a story is.

Since the aforementioned e-book explosion, it really is a buyer’s market. Due to all the choices available, readers can afford to be picky when it comes to what they purchase. The “Look Inside!” feature on Amazon and the like is incredibly helpful, but sometimes that little snippet just isn’t enough. With the vast sea of authors out there, a reasonably priced novella can entice readers and allow them to get a taste of a writer’s style without a major time or financial commitment.

Lastly, every idea, every little seed of creativity is different. Some moments of inspiration are destined to fill multiple books, while others make for excellent fast-paced short stories. For me, Second Skin is the perfect length for the story I wanted to tell: Any longer and it would have dragged unnecessarily. Any shorter and we wouldn’t get the chance to learn about the characters and appreciate why they do things they do.

If you’re the type of book lover who likes to flirt with fun, quick reads, grab your wine glass and your best spy gear and check out Second Skin!

Second Skin (A 1 Night Stand Romance)

Anna’s career as a high-level CIA operative is put on involuntary hiatus. When a trusted colleague passes along the information for the 1Night Stand service, Anna decides to take the plunge against her better judgment and seek some intimate company. But her CIA instincts can’t be ignored, and when she contacts Madame Eve, she uses an alias.

Brendan owns a lucrative manufacturing company, but he’s yet to achieve the goal of finding a woman with whom he can share his successes and joys. But beneath his polished, capable exterior hides the painfully shy teenager he’s never been able to escape. When his own efforts in the dating scene fall short, he turns to 1Night Stand.

It would be so easy to fall in love with Brendan, and Anna’s protective mask slides away, piece-by-piece, revealing more of herself than she should dare. Before she can slip away with the sunrise, Brendan shows their encounter in a new light. Will Anna take a chance on their future, or will she choose to return to her undercover, but lonely life?

Excerpt

“It’s beautiful out here, isn’t it?” His breath danced across the tip of her ear.

“Mm-hmm.”

“Summers in this region are always nice, but they’re nothing compared to the autumn foliage,” he said. “Have you ever been up here during that time of year?”

Anna continued tracing idle lines from his wrist to his elbow. “No, I haven’t.”

His head dipped lower and his lips grazed her skin. “I realize it’s early for us, but I’d love to come back here with you. We could watch the changing colors, cuddle in front of a roaring fire….”

Anguish stabbed at her. The images he described sounded flawless and enticing. Every part of her yearned to agree to whatever he offered, but planning a rendezvous posed too much of a risk. She hadn’t predicted the difficulties of keeping up an ongoing charade with the man she met.

“That sounds lovely.” She swallowed hard and turned toward him. Her cheek rested in the crook of his neck, though its comfort did nothing to assuage her unexpected guilt over the upcoming lie. “Maybe we can work something out.”
