Science Fiction and Fantasy Saturday No. 17 (#sffsat) - Warlock's Pawn

This snippet is from Warlock's Pawn and continues from the last one (click on the SFFSat tag at the bottom of the post to read past snippets). Warlock's Pawn is a fantasy romance inspired by The Arabian Nights. It was released last month and is available on  LSBooksAmazonBarnes & NobleARe, and Kobo. In this post, we learn a little more about why Alia bothered to rescue Duncan in the first place (pretty important, since he hasn't been the most ingratiating fellow thus far).

“You will be more merciful than my kin. That much I know.” There was a defeated certainty in that voice, an earnestness in the way she foretold his victory. “You will conquer these lands, but you will not make innocents pay for the crimes of their lords. Once Dionians swear allegiance to your empire, you will give them a future without starvation and despair.”

Intrigued, he reached for the fabric obscuring her face. She lifted her hand to hinder his movement, and the meager strength he felt against his arm was laughable. But her motion shifted his focus. She had white slender fingers that reminded him of Anora, but this girl’s palm was roughened with calluses that spoke of hard labor rather than privilege.
